PTA Information

PTA meeting tomorrow night

At the monthly PTA meeting, tomorrow, Tuesday May 15, PTA officers for next year will be voted in and the budget will be finalized. The meeting is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Edgewood Library. Childcare is available in the cafeteria and free to parents, thanks to the PTA.

PTA set to fund furniture needs, upgrade to outdated technology

At the budget meeting last week, PTA members agreed to spend about $27,000 to upgrade severely outdated technology (for example, projectors that project images too small for kids in the back to see and computers as old as 2005) and furniture needs, such as kindergarten chairs and desks for a new kinder class next year and broken chairs that teachers are making due with. The money is available through a special fund that was set up when Evergreen Elementary and Edgewood Elementary merged. This proposal will be discussed at the May meeting and voted on at the June meeting—Tuesday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m. in the Edgewood Library.

No thanks, we don’t need any more PTA volunteers!

JUST KIDDING! We have all kinds of volunteer opportunities, including Movie Night Coordinator, Popcorn Coordinator, Social Media Editor and Newsletter Editor, that need to be filled for next year. These things won’t happen next year without volunteers! If we all donated an hour a month, what a difference it would make! Let Tanya know if you are willing to help!

Field Day!

Field Day is on June 12!

More details are coming soon, but please mark your calendars for field day on June 12.  We will be asking for a lot of volunteers on this fun-filled day.  K-2 will have field day in the morning and 3rd-5th will be in the afternoon (times TBA).

Student Enrollment Planning

Will your child be returning to Edgewood next year?

Forms have been sent home asking if your child is returning to Edgewood next year.  Please be sure and turn them in so that we can start planning our classes for next year.  It’s especially important to know if your child is NOT returning to Edgewood or NOT attending Spencer Butte.  The form is attached in case you are missing it.

Volunteer needed

Popcorn Coordinator needed for 2018-2019

Everyone loves Popcorn Wednesdays and we really appreciate Tracie Harness for being the popcorn coordinator these past couple of years.  It’s time to hand over the popcorn coordinator baton to another parent volunteer.  Please let us know if you are interested in being the popcorn coordinator next year. This does not mean that you would be popping popcorn each week!.  The popcorn coordinator helps recruit and train volunteers, creates a schedule and makes sure that there are enough supplies.  Popcorn money helps pay for field trips for the primary grades.

Proposed School  Schedules for Next Year

Picture of a monthly calendarOur school district is moving to a consistent calendar and schedule for all schools in 2018–19 to better serve students, families, staff and our community. This discussion has been underway for more than a year. Details of the new schedule will be settled this spring, and the changes will be in place when school starts in the fall.

Currently each 4J school has a different calendar and schedule, with significant differences in how much instruction time is provided. Next year there will be consistent schedules for families and similar amounts of instruction time at different schools—an increase in learning time for most students in the district.

Starting this fall, all schools will have the same calendar of school days, no-school days and half-days, with only small differences between elementary schools and middle/high schools. Schools also will have consistent start and end times, and the same weekly early-release days, coordinated to provide equitable learning time and efficient student transportation.

To make this possible, every 4J school will have bell schedule adjustments. The proposed new schedule for Edgewood Community Elementary School is 7:55 am-2:35 pm Monday through Thursday, and 7:55 am-12:10 pm on Fridays, to provide time for school and teacher planning, collaboration and professional development. (Our current schedule is 8:35 am-2:45 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 8:35 am-1:45 pm on Wednesdays.)

The school board will discuss the proposed schedule on Wednesday, April 4, and will take action to approve the standard school schedule later this spring.

We know changes in school schedules mean changes for your family schedules, and this can be challenging. We will share calendar and schedule changes with you as soon as possible, so you have time to plan ahead.

To learn more, review the draft schedule, and provide feedback, see http://www.4j.lane.edu/2018/03/standard-school-schedule-coming.
