Kindergarten Orientation for incoming 2018-2019 Kinders this Wednesday 6:00!
Is your child starting Kindergarten in the fall? Do you know someone in the Edgewood neighborhood who will be starting? We are having a Kindergarten Orientation Event this Wednesday, February 28 at 6:00. At this event, parents and students will have an opportunity to meet some of our staff, see the school and pick up enrollment paper work. Can’t make it to the event? No problem! Enrollment paperwork is available at the office. Come fill out an intent to enroll postcard so that we know your child will be attending Edgewood next year!
Academic Achievement Center
The Academic Achievement Center is happy to announce that we will be starting our STEM Shuttle pickup service at Edgewood on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on March 6th. (Students do not have to attend both days.) For more info or to sign up for this service please go to https://www.eugeneaac.com/aac-shuttle and fill out the registration form.
Please check your children’s folders to find this year’s school directory. We are sending home one directory per household. There are extra copies in the office. We are looking for a parent to coordinate the directory for next year. This is a volunteer opportunity that can work from home and there are plenty of parents available to help put it together. Please contact the office if you are interested.
Edgewood Garage Sale!
Edgewood will be taking garage sale donations late winter for a fundraiser. If you have items around the house that you no longer need please consider saving them for our community garage sale. Help out with the Knit Wits! Wednesdays from 1:45-3:30
Our Knitting Club needs another volunteer. Our amazing D1 resident Grandma, Mara would appreciate another set of adult hands to join our Knit Wit group. You do not need to know how to knit to join in the fun. The kids can teach you. Mara and the 9 knitting members have busy hands and fingers and simply want another adult to assist with logistics and general group support. Our group meets every Wednesday from 1:45 – 3:30. Please let Tina Leaton in D1 know if you are interested.
Jump Rope For Heart – Donations due on Wed. January 31
Thank you for participating in Jump Rope for Heart! Mr. Thornton will be collecting donations for the American Heart Association through Wednesday, January 31.
The two Eugene School based Health Centers, located at Churchill and North Eugene High Schools, are open and ready to give immunizations to all children who are lacking immunizations. They are ready to schedule children who participate in public health insurance programs, or have private insurance, or are uninsured. The appointments can be made at: Churchill, tel. 541-790-5227, Claire Bierman is the Health Assistant, North Eugene, tel. 541-790-4445, Kathleen Ybanez is the Health Assistant. The clinics would like to vaccinate as many as possible prior to exclusion day on February 21, 2018. The Churchill Clinic will be open on Monday, February 19 all day, even though it is a school district holiday, and parents/children are welcome. On exclusion day–Wednesday, February 21, Peacehealth will have several persons to help with the immunizations at the North Eugene SBHC so that children can return to school quickly.
The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is excited about the possibility of adding Edgewood Community Elementary School to our pick up service for the STEM Shuttle! We want to see what the interest level is now and see if there is enough interest in an Edgewood pickup. We hope to start picking up after school at Edgewood on Tuesday and/or Thursdays. If you’d like more information on the program you can go to https://www.eugeneaac.com/aac-shuttle or call the AAC at 541-654-4999. Space on the shuttle is limited to 10 students per day. There currently is not an option for Edgewood on the registration page, so please email the AAC at firstname.lastname@example.org and indicate if you’d like Tuesdays, Thursdays, or both Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost would be $30/day and scholarships are available.
“Friendship Difficulties” – the focus of parent education night in February
Edgewood’s counselor Rebecca Ledbetter will help parents navigate the challenges their students have with friends. Come to this free program in the Edgewood cafeteria on Wednesday, February 21 at 6:30 p.m. Part of the session will involve a question-and-answer period. Childcare will be provided for $3/child. Please call the office if you are interested in reserving a spot.

We always have Edgewood shirts and sweatshirts available for purchase in the office (old styles and new). An order can be requested if we don’t have the correct size or style. Once we have enough interest, we will place an order.

Edgewood Music Concerts after Break – Mark your calendars!
On Wednesday, January 16 at 6 PM and Thursday, January 17 at 6 PM, all the students of Edgewood will be presenting the musical revue “Make a Difference: A Celebration of Goodwill”. The String Academy will be joining the presentation on January 16.
The classes performing on January 16: Dena, Becky, Mr. Vanderbilt, Janet, Toni, Rhian, Tina, and Mr. Wines.
The classes performing on January 17: Sofie, Kaley, Mitzi, Adam, Mr. Sumner, Mrs. Stiegler, Mrs. Krueger, and Courtney.

Hi Parents! Thank you for being such a wonderful source of support and encouragement for your students and the staff here at Edgewood! I wanted to put out a request for donations for incentive-based activities and reward activities at the schools. This may be a great way to get rid of some of those items in your home that may be collecting dust in a closet. I am happy to share items with other school counselors to utilize in their schools as well. Thank you so much for your help and support!

Eat tacos, help Edgewood!
On Tuesday, Jan. 9th, Edgewood families can support the Edgewood PTA by eating at Tacovore. Tacovore is famous for its tacos, guacamole and margaritas. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 530 Blair Blvd. Don’t forget to bring the attached flyer! Copies will be coming home too.
Congratulations to everyone involved! If we can keep up the pace we will meet our goal of 10,000 Box Tops for the school year. The first place winner for the first round is Tina’s class with a total of 442, and in second place and only seven Box Tops behind is Mrs. Blake’s class with 435, and in third place is Mr.Vanderbilt’s class with 369.
If we missed a few, don’t worry we are starting over and whatever class gets the most this next section January – March 31st will get the trophies, and then whatever classes collect the most for the year overall get the the trophies at the end of the year.
The Dreamers Acting Studio
Acting Classes are offered at Edgewood on Wednesdays through June 8! Classes are for ages 8 and up, start at 1:45 and end at 3:00. Students learn basic theatre and acting concepts, techniques and terms through a variety of activities and exercises. The class will culminate with a final performance to showcase what students have learned during the term. The cost is $89.00 for four (4) classes. We are hoping to fill food boxes to help 25 Edgewood families cover their basic food needs over winter break. Thank you to everyone who has already brought in donations.
If you are able to help, we’ll be collecting donations through December 15th and are still in need of pretty much everything. Dry goods can be brought into the office or to any of the collection bins in the quads. Cash donations are also accepted to help pay for perishable items such as meats, dairy and cheese. Here are some ideas of non-perishable food items we are looking for:
– rice or pasta meals (mac and cheese)
– peanut butter and Jelly
– canned fruit or vegetables
– granola bars
– fruit snacks
Other ways to help:
We are also hoping to have volunteers sign up to help with the boxes on Friday, December 15. Please let us know if you can help with any of the following:
In the morning after drop off.
– Sorting and organizing the boxes
In the afternoon
– help move food boxes to pick up area
– help distribute boxes to families
In the late afternoon
– help deliver boxes to homes
The office needs more stretchy pants or leggings!
The office could use more stretchy pants or leggings for kids that need a change of clothes. We are especially in need of pants that would fit some of our younger boys in KG-1st. If you have any to donate, we’ll take them!
We try to have the kids outside for recess as often as possible. This means that they will often be outside even when there is a light rain. Please make sure your kids are dressed warmly for recess. It’s not a bad idea to have them carry a change of clothes in case they get wet from the puddles.
Nov. 16 is Harvest Lunch. You are welcome to eat with your student in the fall-themed gym.
Nov. 22, 23 and 24 are no-school days for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Our traditional Harvest Lunch is scheduled for November 16th. This is a lunch where family can join their kids for lunch in a fall-themed festive setting. Flyers went home and we would like to get them back if you are planning to join your kids for lunch that day so that we can get a head count. Payments for the lunch are made at the time of the lunch – we would prefer not to get any ahead of time. Any pre-payments that are made will go into your child’s lunch account and the account will be charged directly for the lunch on that day. Students are $2.90 and adults are $4.00. No charge for students that are free and reduced. Families can request scholarships.
The Menu is Turkey Gravy or Veggie Lasagna, Corn, green salad, fruit salad, dinner roll and dessert.

Edgewood is once again gearing up for the Share the Warmth coat drive where you can donate your gently used winter coats to someone in our Edgewood community who can use it! We need your warm infant, toddler, children’s and adult jackets and coats. Please place clean coats in the bin outside the front office this week (November 13th through 17th) so that we can distribute before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Edgewood teachers are still in need of a few garden volunteers who can help bring classes out to our beautiful garden. Students love learning about how food grows, beneficial insects and our interconnected food web. If you are interested, please contact Robin Detmer at email@example.com.
4J Parent Leaders Network meetings all year
The 4J Parent Leaders Network is an a volunteer network connecting parent organization leaders for mutual support. We share resources, ideas, and best practices to support the involvement of parents and families in the education of their children.
Our meetings for the 2017-2018 school year will take place at the District Office at 200 North Monroe Street Take away tools will be provided.
