Inspire kids with science!

The UO SPICE Science Open House is Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Willamette Atrium at the University of Oregon. The purpose of the event is to help connect community families and educators to science outreach programs on campus and in the community.  All activities are completely free and open to the public.  There will be something fun for children of all ages. In the past, hands-on activities and demonstrations have included the Flubber Factory, the Egg Drop, Lazer Maze and much more. This event is free and is a wonderful way to get kids interested in science.

Thank you to Amy Phillips and all of our ice cream social volunteers! We couldn’t have handled the crowd without you!

Thank you to Julia McMorran and the rest of the Freecycle volunteers for helping Edgewood families take home new-to-them clothing!

Thank you to Amelia Reising and Shawn Hymer for organizing (and doing the bulk of the hard labor) for the tree-planting as part of our playground improvements in the upper playground. Thank you to all of the families who came by to help dig holes, spread mulch and water the baby trees!

***Check out for photos of the tree planting!

Learn about gun safety

Learn about gun safety and storage next Thursday, September 27 6:30

The Edgewood PTA’s first Parent Education Night is Thursday, Sept. 27th in the Edgewood Library. It is free and childcare is provided by the YMCA in the cafeteria for a $3 suggested donation per child. The topic is Be Smart—a campaign to bring together responsible adults to reduce the number of unintentional shootings that occur when children get ahold of an unsecured firearm. Owning a gun is a personal decision, but responsible storage is a public safety issue. Kids and unsecured guns are a potentially lethal combination. We hope you can make it and learn more!

School Pictures

Picture Days  next week!

Thank you for being patient as we work out the kinks in our Picture Day schedule.  We will send out an email as soon as we have the class schedules figured out!  Please let the office know if you are interested in helping out escorting kids to the camera and back to class again.

Curriculum Night

Please note that it was mistakenly excluded from the PTA calendar this year. We hope to see you there!

Limited Childcare is provided in the cafeteria for children that are KG age and older.  Please call the office to reserve a spot.  $3/child.

Curriculum Night Schedule:

6:00-6:15 – Everyone meets in the Gym

6:20-6:40 – Session 1

6:45-7:05 – Session 2  (For families that visit multiple classrooms)

If you prefer, please contact Amy Phillips at to sign up.

Come find bigger clothes at the Ice Cream Social!

Can you believe how your child has grown? Last spring’s pants are 2 inches too short and that fleece at the back of the closet shows a belly!

But you didn’t have time for back-to-school shopping? No problem! Edgewood’s Freecycle event has got you covered. During the Edgewood Ice Cream Social on Thursday, Sept. 13 from 6 to 7 p.m., gently used clothing is available to any Edgewood family for FREE! (They will be displayed on tables on the asphalt behind the gym.)

This is a great way to recycle and reuse—and not fill our landfills. Plus it saves money!

Come check out the clothes, fill a bag and get your child ready for fall and winter!

Donate your child’s too-small clothing items this week!

Gently used clothes will be collected in a bin outside of the office starting Monday morning. Drop off the clothes in bags and no ripped items, please.

New and exciting additions from the PTA

Edgewood to meet technology/furniture needs next year, thanks to PTA

PTA members voted to spend about $27,000 to upgrade severely outdated technology (for example, projectors that project images too small for kids in the back to see and computers as old as 2005) and furniture needs, such as kindergarten chairs and desks for a new kinder class next year and broken chairs that teachers are making due with. The money is available through a special fund that was set up when Evergreen Elementary and Edgewood Elementary merged.

Pick up your Medications.

No Medications Left Behind!

All student oral medications will be discarded on June 18th.  No Exceptions!

Set yourself a reminder to pick up medications no later than June 15th, the last day of school.  We cannot keep medications over the summer and we cannot check them out to your child. Epi pens and inhalers will be sent home with your child only with permission.  Call 541-790-8700 to arrange this.

An extra special thank you to David Van Slyke for his role as PTA treasurer this year! We appreciate all of the work you put into this role and writing oh-so-many checks!

Another extra special thank you to Tracie Harness for her role as PTA vice-president this year! We appreciate all of the work you did keeping track of so many members and for your leadership in remodeling the staff room!

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this school year fabulous! It takes hundreds of volunteers throughout the year to pull off all the fundraising and community building events, field trips and classroom activities each year. Thank you for stepping up and taking on some of these tasks!

Have a great week and we will see you next year!
